Kinshasa, DRC – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is set to receive US$22 million in humanitarian aid from the European Union to help fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the central African country is not only battling against COVID-19 but also against a new wave of Ebola and a measles pandemic which has already claimed over 6 000 lives since 2019.

UNICEF warns that the country is also threatened by a potential resurgence of polio, chickenpox, yellow fever, hepatitis B, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, and meningitis.

“The measures needed to slow COVID-19 are having an impact on the overall measles response, including transporting vaccines, assembling dedicated teams, and launching vaccination campaigns.

Every delay and every obstacle increases the risk of the measles epidemic continuing to spread, killing more children,” said Emmanuel Lampaert, DRC’s coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).

DRC has recorded over 4 000 COVID-19 cases and 90 deaths. Unknown militia also seem to be worsening the situation as they continue to destabilize the progress being made by burning houses and health care services.

Qatar Airways resumes flights to Africa

Daniel Itai – The Zimbabwe Daily

Doha, Qatar – Qatar Airways will be resuming its flights to Africa starting with Tanzania from the 16th of June after almost four months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The airline’s officials said that resumption of the airline on June 16 will be the first direct passenger schedule flight from Hamad International Airport to Africa since suspension of flights in March this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a bid to ensure safety and security of travelers, the airline said that it has further enhanced its onboard safety measures for passengers and cabin crew.

The airline has implemented several changes, including the introduction of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suits for cabin crew while onboard as well as a modified service that reduces interactions between the passengers and the crew inflight.

“Our wide network of flights during these challenging times has ensured we are kept up to date with the latest in international airport procedures and implemented the most advanced safety and hygiene measures on board our aircraft and in Hamad International Airport,” said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways’ Group Chief Executive.

There will be three flights per week, available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays connecting Doha and Tanzania’s Dar es Salaam.

The airline further said that it will not charge any fare differences for travel completed before December 31, 2020, after which fare rules will apply. All tickets booked for travel up to December 31, 2020 will be valid for 2 years from the date of issuance.

Lilongwe, Malawi – Malawians will be headed for fresh Presidential polls come June 23 following the nullification of the 2019 Presidential polls by the country’s Constitutional Court earlier on this year.

Although the goverment is disagreeing with the motion Malawi’s Parliamentarians have agreed that 23 June is the date for fresh elections.

Malawi’s President Peter Mutharika, is seemingly not happy with the new date rather insisting that it be furthered a bit due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Malawi’s controversial former President Joyce Banda, has rubbished the claims that the country is gripped with COVID-19.

“We are hearing in the news that there is a Coronavirus outbreak in the world, we thank God for favoring our country as we don’t have it here, they are faking it,” said the former President.

She further accused the government of embezzling COVID-19 funds for their own personal upkeep.

“We are therefore demanding all the funds which have been pumped into Malawi in the name of COVID-19 to the rightful owners and be used for development projects,” said Banda.

To date, Malawi has recorded over 400 COVID-19 cases and 4 deaths. Earlier on this week, Tanzania’s President John Magufuli also claimed that the East African country is now COVID-19 free largely due to “answered prayers.”

Dodoma, Tanzania – Freeman Mbowe, leader of Tanzania’s main opposition political party, Chadema, was on Tuesday night attacked at his house by unknown assailants.

Mbowe has a fractured right leg due to the assault, although the police are still investigating the incident members of Chadema are already pointing fingers at Tanzania’s President John Magufuli for having a hand in the incident.

“Unknown people surrounded him and assaulted him before he started taking the stairs. Though these people had carried firearms, they didn’t use them,” said Chadema’s Secretary-General John Mnyika.

In recent months, Mbowe accused Magufuli of being in a state of denial over the COVID-19 pandemic and warned that his government was hiding information about the real scale of the crisis.

On Tuesday, Magufuli declared the East African country COVID-19 free due to prayers by citizens, although Magufuli is stating that Tanzania is now COVID-19 free, the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 database states otherwise citing more than 500 COVID-19 cases.

Ndola, Zambia – The Zambian government has postponed the 2020 Zambia International Trade Fair which was scheduled to take place in Ndola from the 1st to the 7th of July due to COVID-19.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister Christopher Yaluma stated that the decision was arrived at after consultations with the relevant stakeholders.

“The world is currently facing unprecedented public health emergencies arising from the COVID-19 and has adversely affected the global economy and our way of life in our communities.

In order to mitigate the adverse impact of this unprecedented global health pandemic, most governments in countries affected have resorted to imposing partial or complete lockdown measures whose immediate economic effects include reduced business performance.

The lockdown measures imposed to control the spread and pace of COVID-19 pandemic has caused instantaneous stress on the Zambian economy and most sectors are affected in a varied way. Notably, the tourism, mining, manufacturing, construction as well as the wholesale and retail trade sectors are expected to record sluggish growth relative to the previous year owing to the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

In view of the above-mentioned, the government through the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry regrets to inform all partners, exhibitors, sponsors and both foreign and local visitors of the postponement of 2020 Zambia International Trade Fair, which was scheduled to take place from the 1st to the 7th of July under the theme, Promoting Value-Addition for Sustainable Growth in the city of Ndola on the Copperbelt Province.

The decision was reached after consultations with the relevant stakeholders and taking into consideration that the outbreak of COVID- 19 pandemic has led to a rise in concerns from potential participating companies who have been negatively affected by the sudden slow-down of economic activities,” said the Minster.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) slams reopening of schools

Daniel Itai – The Zimbabwe Daily

Harare, Zimbabwe – The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has dismissed the proposed reopening of schools by the government on the 28th of July 2020.

“The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) earlier on  announced that June examinations will be conducted beginning on 30 June. The Minister of Information Hon. Monica Mutsvangwa later announced that schools will open on 28 July for candidates for 2020 public examinations.

It should be noted that 66 000 candidates are sitting for 2020 June examinations. 9 900 teachers will be needed to invigilate the examinations.

On opening schools 136 000 teachers and almost 5 million learners will be admitted in our schools.

The teacher compliment will  have to be boosted by 90 000 teachers to achieve social distancing in our classrooms and plug the gap of staff shortage.

ARTUZ jointly authored petitions with 6 other Teacher Unions on 2 May, 26 May and 8 June 2020. On the three occassions we sought to impress upon government on measures that should be undertaken for safe schools opening.

On 29 May we made submissions to Parliament portfolio committeee on education making recommendations on conditions that should be met for safe opening of schools.

Our recommendations were taken on board by the committee as demonstrated by the motion moved for debate by Committee Chairperson Hon. Misihairambwi Mushonga on 4 June 2020. The ensuing debate was one sided with all parliamentarians agreeing that schools should remain closed until safety measures have been instituted.

It was therefore a shock for us when ZIMSEC announced dates for June examinations and we were further shocked when the Minister of Information announced dates for reopening schools,” read a statement from ARTUZ.

Although Zimbabwe is still sitting on less than 300 COVID-19 cases and four deaths many still think it’s immature for government to consider the reopening of schools.

5 common types of consulting business

0

While you might not ever see them or realise, consultants are working within most industries. From the shopping mall you visit every week, to governments organisations and education institutions, consultants are evaluating customer satisfaction and the success of marketing campaigns to improve brand engagement and performance for companies around the globe.

This gives people with different passions, skills, and strengths the opportunity to be part of the consulting industry.

When looking at the various types of consulting roles that are available there is five typical categories: strategy consulting, operations consulting, financial consulting, information technology consulting and human resources consulting.

If you are contemplating entering the consulting business and want to know which types would suit you best – let us help get you sorted.

Strategy consulting

Strategy consultants work on a company’s long-term goals, and the bigger picture. They will identify ways to increase profitability and competitiveness and find ways to implement these in a cost-effective manner, while also tracking the results and profits.

McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), are some the most well-known strategy-focussed consulting firms.

Example: Despite decades in business, an adult sleep and fitness wear retailer is noticing more competition and it is impacting their profits. The retailer employs a strategy consultant who takes a closer look at the company’s marketing and sales strategy compared to that of their competition. The consultant identifies that sleep and fitness wear for young people is not a big focus of the competitors and creates a plan to expand the retailer’s products in this segment.

Operations consulting

If ‘systems’ and processes are your thing then operations consulting could be the right fit for you.  They assess operations from production, sales, distribution, and customer service perspectives. They will aim to streamline processes to reduce costs, time, staff involved all while making sure the client is achieving or bettering their goals.

Strategy consulting and operations consulting are closely linked. As we have mentioned strategy consultants focus on the big picture, while operations consultants focus on what is happening behind the behind-the-scenes. Because the two types of consulting are so closely linked you will find that many of the major leading firms will specialise in both services.

Example: An operations consultant might work with the retail client to reduce their production costs, which ultimately allows the client to sell products at a cheaper rate, making them more competitive.

Financial consulting

Financial consultants assess a client’s financial details and records, and then find way to improve the financial health of the business.

This could include taking a look at wage and marketing expenditure, taxes, business expenses and investments, as well as insurances.

This type of consulting would best suit someone who has a degree in finance or accounting.

Example: A retail client has expanded their stores across the globe, but they employ a financial consultant to help them better understand the markets they have entered and how to navigate the different tax laws they have to work within.

Information technology consulting (IT consulting)

An IT consultant helps a company make the most of technology. A consultant might identify opportunities to change or upgrade devices and software programs, or design tailor made software for a specific need. The demand for IT consultants is increasing because of threats to businesses like hacking, and security breaches which can risk a company’s important information and the information of their clients.

IT consulting work can also be called tech consulting, IT advisory, business technology services or IT consulting.

Prominent firms that provide IT consulting include Accenture, Capgemini, and IR.

Example:  An IT consultant could develop an app so retail staff can make sales remotely on the sales floor, without a customer having to line up or attend a sales counter. The consultant would design the app, manage its roll-out alongside staff training and fix and issues.

Human resources consulting (HR consulting)

HR consultants handle matters concerning a firm’s hiring, employee relationship and workplace health and safety.

They work with clients from the beginning of employing new staff to managing staff job descriptions and expectations. They create systems to look after staff during and out of work hours and look after remuneration. They are expected to become the keepers of a company’s culture, and could provide advice on expansions, consolidations, or mergers.

Example: A retail client that is opening stores that sell sleep and active wear for youth needs a HR consultant to assist with the expansion and recruitment of management roles.

Where to from here?

The main five types of consulting have specific skills and qualities. Be confident of where your interests and experience fit, but make sure you choose a path that you know you will enjoy.

One more thing to consider for all types of consultants is getting professional liability insurance which is very important given all these consultants provide a lot of services and advice for their clients. If they a client makes an allegation of a negligent act, error or omission and attempts to sue the business, professional liability insurance may help provide financial protection for the consultants.

Devastating effects of Covid-19 on thousands of Street Kids in Zimbabwe: Edith Chibhamu

Edith Chibhamu

The abrupt announcement of the lockdown came as a shock to many and various civil society actors were caught unprepared. Though the measures by the government to implement lockdown are necessary, the average person on the streets of Harare is suffering and sleeping on an empty stomach due to lack of enough resources. There are serious negative consequences from the current Covid-19 shutdown which include mental instability, hunger, domestic violence and less production on the economy. Moreover, street kids are unfortunately at the negative receiving end of all this turmoil.

In Zimbabwe more than 1.6 million children are orphans and thousands of them are leashing onto the streets every year in search of greener pastures. Towns and cities have become the home of many forgotten children.

During the ‘Angels for life foundation’ rounds, I was alerted of many children sleeping on the pavements of the streets of Harare, slowly dying of hunger. Our inability as people has snatched all hope away from these little kids. They lack basic commodities like food and water or even same few blankets and jackets to harbour themselves from this June’s freezing cold.

Homeless people and street kids should be made a priority in our nation, not only on the basis of the government’s responsibility but by our means of reviving humanity.

Paying a closer look on how the police is daily chasing people away from public places. This simply means that the street kids and other homeless people have no access to finding part-time jobs or beg for some money to redeem them for the time being. I fear we will burry more people from hunger and starvation than from the actual pandemic cause.

I do understand and appreciate the efforts of free Aid that has been going on from the government, as well as many other foundations but, we can all agree that a lot still need to be done. Policies to help these innocent kids should be immediately implemented before much harm is caused. Let’s help each other rise, together WE CAN.

Discover tips for safe investment in South Africa

0

Today, the range of investment opportunities is wide. From deposit accounts to derivatives, each type has its risks. Here is how to invest safely.

How to Invest Money Safely

Investment is part and parcel of any prudent financial strategy. Consumers who care about the future ensure their money works. Like saving, investing can be done in many ways. What are the pillars of a consistent strategy? Here are seven essential tips for South Africa’s safe investment.

1. Define Your Target

Begin by analyzing your needs and end goals. What do you expect from your investment efforts? Any viable plan is always based on clearly defined objectives. Investment and saving are both important, but only the former can bring a return.

How much can you afford to invest at the moment? It is recommended everyone has an emergency fund big enough to cover a few months of expenses. The first priority should be the basic financial cushion.

2. Know Your Opportunities

Research the market to see which styles of investment are available. Modern strategies include digital tools that were non-existent a few decades ago. It is possible to trade currency pairs or virtual derivatives like CFDs. A diversified portfolio of such assets has a lower overall risk.

Local brokers like FXTM provide a wealth of resources for Forex education that include neat video tutorials. Today, online trading is used by 15+ million people across the world. If you master it, you will be making a profit from the comfort of your home.

3. Consider the Length

All opportunities can be split into short-term, medium-term, and long-term. The choice must depend on your personal goals and financial situation. Be sure about how soon you want to get your money back. Some forms of investment do not allow you to withdraw until the term expires. Are you sure you will not need it urgently?

The goal, the time frame, and the level of risk should all be appropriate. Imagine you are planning to make down payment for a house in a year. If you invest in shares, the market may move against you. Returns cannot be guaranteed. What if short-term changes bring a loss in 11 months from now?

For more immediate goals, the safest methods are most preferable, especially for the risk-averse. A cash savings account will not bring impressive interest, but it can beat inflation. This is better than letting your money sit in a jar.

On the other hand, for long-term scenarios, investment in stocks is reasonable. If your goal is to save up for retirement in 20 years from now, short-term fluctuations have little meaning. You will be looking at the bigger picture.

3. Make a Plan

Once the goals are crystal clear, develop a thoughtful course of action. You could decide to start with modest risk and slowly increase the stakes. It is recommended you consult a finance expert before signing any agreements.

A proven way to hedge risk is through diversification. You could develop a portfolio with several investment products. This way, if one of the assets underperforms, it will be compensated by better returns elsewhere. For instance, a trader may spread their risks across currency pairs, CFDs, and binary options at the same time. Balanced portfolios boost profit potential but require experience.

4. How Much Control do You Want?

Are you planning to pursue a hands-on approach? If you have sufficient knowledge and financial management brings satisfaction, you can buy individual shares. This requires full awareness of potential risks.

If you want decisions to be made for you, consider mutual funds. In such arrangements, your money is pooled with contributions from other members. The resources may be used for diverse purposes.

Forex traders who lack time or experience take advantage of copy trading. The scheme is based on delegation, with a strategy manager responsible for decision-making. The client will only pay a fee if online trading brings profit.

6. Check the Costs

Make sure all fees for the chosen methods are clear. For example, the direct purchase of individual shares involves dealing with costs. Investment fund managers also charge for their services. In any case, request detailed information on all payments involved.

7. Investments to Avoid

In general, rookies should always start with the least risky investments. Steer clear of products you do not understand. Raise the degree of risk gradually as you gain experience and knowledge. Of course, dubious services that promise unrealistic returns should be avoided altogether.

Whatever method you opt for, check the status of your intermediary. Is the company licensed to operate in your region? Is it subject to control by reputable state authorities? Check customer reviews online.

Playing It Safe

Overall, avoid rash decisions and stick to methods you can understand. If you are only setting off your investment journey, seek professional advice. Spread your risks across several instruments, and review the strategy periodically to keep track of progress and make adjustments accordingly.
